ECAI/Rumsey Clearinghouse Search

TMJava provides map-based spatial searching of the ECAI clearinghouse of cultural datasets and background geographic data. The search includes the Rumsey Map Collection, one of the largest digitised collections of historical maps in the world. Search results can be overlaid and displayed in the TMJava map interface, as well as through WMS and Macromedia Flash (.swf) views.

This application illustrates cross-collection spatial searching, overlaying of distributed digital data, on-map digitising, automatic map construction, incremental detail on zoom-in, time filtering and on-the-fly generation of map animations.

MacquarieNet Atlas of Indigenous Australia

TMJava drives MacquarieNet's Atlas of Indigenous Australia and Explore Australia interactive maps. The public can display and overlay the many thematic maps of the Atlas.

Subscribers can view MacquarieNet's Explore Australia where maps link to information derived from several web-accessible databases providing high quality Australian content. The site is particularly oriented towards the secondary education market and is syndicated to a number of State education authorities.

Highlights include on-the-fly graph generation from an interactive map of census boundaries and delivery of historical, environmental, indigenous and current affairs information through an interactive TMJava map interface. To view the TMJava maps, please visit MacquarieNet

Parramatta Historical Archaeological Landscape Management Study

The PHALMS project was undertaken in 2000 and 2001 by Godden Mackay Logan Pty Ltd, in association with the Archaeological Computing Laboratory, University of Sydney, for the NSW Heritage Office and other project partners including State Projects, Parramatta City Council, the Parramatta Rail Link and the NSW Property Council.

This application demonstrates how TimeMap can be used to display a multi-temporal study with multiple datasets.

This map was also delivered as a CD-ROM linking to the online heritage register.

International Dunhuang Project

The International Dunhuang Project(IDP) was established in 1993 following a meeting of conservators from all over the world to promote the study and preservation of manuscripts and printed documents from Dunhuang and other Central Asian sites through international co-operation. The secretariat is at The British Library in the Oriental and India Office Collections.

The TimeMap Team developed a pilot interactive map for The International Dunhuang Project and the British Library as part of the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative.

The map connected here is one of our earlier TimeMap applications and contains only demonstration datasets.

UNESCO World Heritage Center

This interactive map of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Asian Region illustrates the use of TimeMap TMJava as a way of contextualising information using an interactive map. In this case, heritage sites are placed geographically, and through time, in relation to ecological zones and cultural events, and the sites are linked to rich information, including site-specific web links, held in a backend database.

The map also illustrates TMJava's ability to handle very rich data: the ecological zones data is over 80 MBytes, the background world image is 250 MBytes uncompressed, and there are more than 600 individual site plans which are loaded automatically as one zooms in to each site (not available on the public version of the map).

This application illustrates the use of a number of online databases with map-based data collection and display.

The map is driven from several MySQL databases which maintain lists of archaeological sites, departments, projects and practitioners, which have been used for several years to generate lists on the Archaeological Computing Laboratory web site and which can be updated by the individuals concerned through web based forms.
